Chapter 9
Lance
âWait here,â I said to Charles when we pulled into the parking lot of Maggianoâs Little Italy and walked in the door at exactly six oâclock. I looked around, and Raif and Selestra were already there, waiting at a table.
âHello, Mr. Steel!â the hostess said as I approached. âOne for dinner today?â
I shook my head, nodding toward Raif and Selestra, draped all over him. âI have a business meeting.â There was no way I was going to tell her that I was meeting old friends. They ceased to be friends long ago.
She nodded. âVery well, then. Right this way.â She led me to their table and laid the menu down. âWhat can I get you to drink?â
âBourbon, neat.â Even though vampires couldnât get drunk because of our regenerative powers, I needed something strong to get through this conversation.
âMake it three,â Raif added. âAnd put his on my tab.â
âYes, sir.â She smiled, looking between us. âIâll be right back.â Then she headed off to do our bidding.
Selestraâs arm was around Raif, but she smiled as she looked up at me with interest. âItâs good to see you again, Lance.â
âI wish I could say the same.â
Selestra reminded me of a modern woman, even though she had been born centuries ago. Although she had never said as much, I was sure she resented being treated as property or a commodity in those days. It was clear that she was born about five centuries too early, for I had never met a more independent woman in my life, other than Leila.
Ignoring her, I turned my attention to Raif. âSo, why are we here?â
âHere you go!â the waitress set our drinks on the table, but her smile faded when she looked between us. âWhat would you like for dinner?â
âIâm fine. Thank you.â There was no way that I was going to sit here and have dinner with them like old friends.
âAs are we,â Raif answered for both of them.
âActually.â Selestra smiled, handing her the menu. âBring us an order of your Bruschetta, please.â
âYes, maâam.â The waitress took the menu and the others laying on the table. âIâll have that right out.â She hurried away as quickly as she could, obviously sensing danger. Most humans could sense that we were dangerous but couldnât explain how. They just knew enough to keep their distance.
Raif took a sip of his drink and then looked into my eyes. âYou took everything away from me, Lance. I just thought it was fair to let you know that Iâll do the same to you.â
I scoffed. âObviously, I havenât taken everything from you, Raif.â I nodded toward Selestra.
He nodded. âShe came back to me, yes. But not until you had gotten your fill of her.â
âThatâs a lie!â I said a bit louder than I had intended. I looked around, and a couple glanced in our direction. But with one stern look from me, they quickly paid their bill and left. âI was good to Selestra. I just grew tired of her games.
